Search facility on the Internet

It is possible to search all our birth, marriage, death and census records online at ScotlandsPeople, a partnership between the General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon enabled by Scotland On Line.

Demographic and other statistical information

We can provide information on Scotland's: population (estimates, projections), households and vital events (births, marriages, deaths etc.). Contact us with your specific requirements. Check out our Statistics area first though. It's probably got what you're looking for and you can download material from it free of charge.

Census products and publications

We have extensive statistics derived from the decennial census. For the 2001 Census these are to be had online, on paper and on CD-ROM. See the 2001 Census Results on this website and more detailed results at subnational levels on SCROL (Scotland's Census Results OnLine). We have census statistics from 1991 and earlier years too. Contact us to find out more. If we do not have what you need readily to hand, ask about commissioning a census tabulation to your own design.

Assistance to medical researchers

We can provide assistance to those undertaking medical research studies covering the population of Scotland. For more information see under Medical Research on this website or contact us.

Geography products

We have two complementary geography products available: digital boundaries and index files. Boundary sets are available for current postcodes and for the postcodes and output areas used in both the 1991 and 2001 Censuses. Digital boundaries are also available for some higher areas such as electoral and administrative areas. The main purpose of the Index is to provide an allocation of postcodes to higher areas. Contact us with your requirements. For more information see under Geography on this website.
